06 / GCSE AND A-LEVEL

GCSE and A-Level Computer Science

GCSE and A-Level preparation is part of the Future Engineers Programme. We get children ready for their Computer Science GCSE and A-Level exams: we teach from the same official textbooks they use at school, then go further into real coding in Python. All classes are taught in groups, online and in person.

GCSE

Exam boards we cover

  • OCR J277: Component 1, Computer Systems (50%); Component 2, Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming (50%)
  • AQA 8525: Paper 1, Computational Thinking and Programming Skills (50%); Paper 2, Computing Concepts (50%)

08 / STAGES

Continuous development, seven stages

Future Engineers is not a fixed-length course. Children aged 8–14 progress step by step through seven stages, at their own pace, towards becoming professional software engineers.

STAGE 1

Digital Foundation

You can explain a computer as hardware and software, sort parts into peripherals and internal devices, and name application software, an operating system, and firmware with an example of each. You can also use a computer with care, type accurately, and build a small project you can explain.

STAGE 2

Explorer

You can build a simple website with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and explain how a browser asks for a page and shows it.

STAGE 3

Builder

You can read and write larger programs, organise code, use Git to save your work, and test a change before you call it finished.

STAGE 4

Junior Developer

You can build a small app with a screen, a server, and stored data, then show that it works for someone else.

STAGE 5

Software Engineer

You can work in Linux, describe how a service stays online, and explain how engineers keep a system safe and reliable.

STAGE 6

Future AI Engineer

You can explain what an AI system is doing, write a careful prompt, and check an answer before you trust it.

STAGE 7

Specialist Engineer

You can follow one specialist path — AI, security, infrastructure, software design, electronics, or games — and present a project you built and tested.

09 / LEVELS

Four levels

In the specialist stage, each student’s work is assessed at one of four levels.

LEVEL 1

Foundation

Follows a specialist workflow with scaffolding and explains core concepts.

LEVEL 2

Builder

Independently implements, tests and troubleshoots normal cases.

LEVEL 3

Specialist

Handles unfamiliar cases, justifies trade-offs and produces professional evidence.

LEVEL 4

Mentor

Can review another student’s work, identify risks and communicate improvements.

10 / PRACTISE

Practise on The Last Dev Standing

The Last Dev Standing is our own content and competitions site, where students practise their coding stages between classes.
